Snapshot personalizes your car insurance rate so you pay based on how you drive instead of just traditional factors. In most states, you get an automatic discount‡ just for participating and a personalized rate at renewal, depending on your results. While your rate could increase with high-risk driving, most drivers save with Snapshot.† In fact, we've handed out over $2.8 billion in discounts since 2009!
How does Snapshot work?
Using either the Progressive mobile app or a plug-in device, Snapshot measures your driving over the course of your policy period. When your policy renews, you get a personalized rate based on how safely you drive. Avoiding hard braking, fast acceleration, and phone use while driving can all help you save more.

We get it. Sometimes you have no choice but to brake hard or accelerate quickly. Don't worry; a few of these won't affect your rate significantly.

As much as you can, avoid driving between 12 a.m. and 4 a.m. on weekends when the roads can be more dangerous.

This isn't always easy, but the less you drive, the more you can save. If time on the road isn't something you can control, then how safe you drive counts for a lot.

And remember...avoid texts, calls, or other handheld phone activity when you're behind the wheel.

Tips to maximize your Snapshot discount
Limit hard breaks and accelerations
Go easy on the gas, and avoid slamming your brakes.
Avoid late night driving
Limit trips between 12-4 a.m. on weekends, as the roads can be more dangerous then.
Drive less overall
If you spend less time behind the wheel, you could save more.
Limit phone use
Keep your phone mounted to avoid distractions and boost your discount.**
Avoid tailgating
Following the vehicle in front of you too closely increases the risk of a hard stop or collision.
Slow down at traffic lights
Approach traffic lights cautiously in case they turn yellow or red quickly.
Accelerate smoothly
Don't take off too quickly when the light changes.
Drive consistently
Familiar locations and traffic patterns tend to be less risky, so driving the same amount of time at a regular time of day can help increase your discount.
You get an automatic discount just for signing up. It's credited on your very first policy period (before you start your Snapshot program) and expires when you renew. Then you get a rate based on your actual driving.
+
$328Average discount at program completion*
The Snapshot discount is credited when you renew your auto policy with Progressive (usually after six months), assuming we’ve collected the required minimum driving data. Customers who renewed their policy, and earned a Snapshot discount, saved an average of $328.*
Your rate may increase with high-risk driving. But, only about 2 out of 10 drivers actually get an increase.
Common questions about Snapshot
Don't see your question here? Take a look at our Snapshot FAQ page for more answers.
Phone usage only applies if you're using the mobile app. Using your phone's GPS or changing a song on your music app while it's mounted shouldn't affect your results. However, if the app detects screen interaction while your phone isn't mounted you may get worse results.
Drivers who consistently drive safely (avoid hard braking, speeding, etc.) could save more on their car insurance with Snapshot. It can also be a good fit for drivers who want to use their results to develop safer driving habits.
